The University of North Alabama Women's Center in partnership with the Shoals chapter of the American Association of University Women will be hosting Janet Smith from the Southern Poverty Law Center to speak in Wesleyan Auditorium on Wednesday Oct. 14 at 11 a.m. According to their website the Southern Poverty Law Center, SPLC, was founded in 1971 as a small civil rights law firm. Today, SPLC is internationally known for its tolerance education programs, its legal victories against white supremacists and it's tracking of hate groups. Smith is a Research Analyst for the Intelligence Report, the Intelligence Project's quarterly magazine that exposes extremists groups in the U.S. Smith has tracked white nationalist, neo-Confederate, and Holocaust denial groups. Her most recent work has focused on the activities of the anti-immigration, militia/patriot, sovereignty, and tea party movements in the U.S. Co-director of the UNA Women's Center, Dr. Anna Lott, invited Janet Smith to speak at UNA. "We invited her to tell her story about what she has done, and what is still going on. I don't think people are aware of it," said Lott. "I think she is an inspiration." The Women's Center will be holding a reception at the Women's Center house immediately following the event.About The University of North Alabama
